San Francisco Hilton Union Square Hotel

Updated: Mar 18

G and I travelled to San Francisco from Vegas in early September landing into San Francisco airport in the afternoon. We travelled by BART train from the airport arriving into Powell Street which is just a few blocks from Union Square. The BART train costs just $11 each and took around 30 minutes.

The Hilton Union Square is located on O’Farrell Street and is around a 5 minute walk to Union Square, or a 30 minute walk up to Fisherman’s Wharf and the Piers.

At check in you are charged $25 per night which is classed as a resort fee but is equivalent to the city tax that is charged across Europe. They also took a deposit of $150 ($50 per night) which is refundable provided there is no damage to your room. You will of course need a credit card for this purpose.

We had a double room which had two huge double beds - on our trip across America and Canada we did not need to sleep together once! As mother and daughter this is never a problem but when we travel together in Europe we are often given one double or two twin beds. Here, we managed to get huge queen beds in every hotel we stayed in !

The room had ample storage, a large closet, drawer space and a safe in the closet. It also had a desk and chair and decent lighting/lamps etc. The bathroom was ample and there were plenty of towels. As we were only staying for 3 nights we didn’t really unpack!

The hotel has a grab and go shop in the reception area which we used frequently for coffee and breakfast items. You could pay at the time of purchase or charge to your room and pay when you check out.

There is also a restaurant where you can purchase breakfast. This is called ‘Poached” and is open from 6.30am/ 7am at the weekend. We actually managed to get vouchers for a free breakfast here as on arrival to our room, we discovered that the fridge still contained food from previous occupants and the bin had not been emptied. Otherwise breakfast will set you back around $45 each so pretty steep! Hilton Honours Members can get a complimentary breakfast voucher so it may be worth signing up to this beforehand.

The hotel also has a fitness Centre, swimming pool and roof top bar.

It really was a nice enough place to stay - we stayed for 3 nights and used the hotel as a base, using the grab and go for pastries and coffee mainly if we had an early pick up. It was central, being on a main road that leads all the way up to Fisherman’s Wharf one way, and down to Union Square in the other direction. We discovered a great local restaurant serving take out pasta which was lovely when we really didn’t fancy going out to a arestaurant, and we spent far too long in Macy’s (as usual).

There are trams and buses running up and down all day from Union Square and you can pick up the famous cable cars from the Union Square area too. The front desk clerks are friendly and helpful and can provide you with information on things to do in San Francisco, there is late check out and bag storage also available if required. There is also a bar in reception !

So, wherever you stay in San Francisco, enjoy !

See you soon
